Abstract
The seashore plant Maoutia setosa is a member of the genus Maoutia within the Urticaceae
family. A previous study has shown that the extracts of M. setosa containing several bioactive
compounds, such as alkaloids, sterols, polyphenolic compounds, and triterpenes. The extracts
of M. setosa also have been found to exhibit antibacterial activity. There are seven known
compounds, including six terpenoids, friedelin (1), oleanolic acid (2), ursolic acid (3), pomolic
acid (4), (23E)-coumaroylhederagenin (5), corosolic acid (6) and one phenylpropanoid,
coniferaldehyde (7) were isolated from M. setosa. These compounds were further evaluated for
their cytotoxic effects against oral cancer (SCC2095), gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS), and
prostate cancer (PC-3) cell lines. The results indicated that compound 6 exhibited significant
cytotoxic activities against SCC2095 and AGS cell lines, with IC50 values of 7.9 μM and 7.1
μM, respectively.
