Abstract
Pyrrosiae Folium (Shiwei, PF) refers to the dried leaves of three species—Pyrrosia sheareri
(Baker) Ching, P. lingua (Thunb.) Farw., and P. petiolosa (Christ) Ching. It is commonly used
for the treatment of urethritis, nephritis, and other urinary system disorders, and is also
considered to have therapeutic effects against prostatitis. H owever, preliminary investigations
revealed frequent misuses of PF in the Taiwanese herbal market, where it is often adulterated
with P. porosa (C. Presl) Hovenkamp, P. calvata (Baker) Ching, and Diplazium subinuatum due
to their similar morphological appearance. To ensure clinical safety and efficacy, twenty-nine
commercial PF samples were collected from traditional herbal shops across Taiwan and
systematically analyzed in this study. Identification methods based on appearance features,
microscopic morphology, thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and high-performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC) were established. The results indicated that among the samples, one
was identified as P. sheareri, eight as P. lingua, two as P. petiolosa, four as P. calvata, eleven
as other Pyrrosia species, and three as D. subinuatum. This study provides a scientific reference
for the authentication and quality evaluation of Pyrrosiae Folium and the related misuded
species.
