               Abstract
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder which is prevalent in elderly. Pharmacological
treatments for insomnia that conventionally prescribed are Benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor
agonists. Though effective, they also have some serious side effects and its long acting time
represent potential threat of fall and cognitive impairment, especially in elderly care. Baicalein
is an active compound originating from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, which has
been used for anti-inflammation, anti-bacteria, anti-hypertension, anti-allergy and sedation in
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Recently, the role of Baicalein in insomnia has grown
significantly because easy accessibility and low cost compared to other TCM options. In this
study, we evaluate probable mechanisms and rational use of baicalein comparing
Structure_activity Relationship with conventional medicines like BZDs.
