Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common, chronic, symmetrical autoimmune disease that
initially affects joints, and eventually the skin, eyes, heart, kidneys, lungs, and other organs.
According to statistic of World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control,
Ministry of Health and Welfare (CDC) of Taiwan, nearly 0.44-0.5% people from RA, which
means that approximately 44-50 people out of every 10,000 are RA patients. It can be seen that
the research on RA is crucial and has important socioeconomic significance globally.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are commonly used as adjunctive therapies for a variety
of diseases in Asian countries. Anisomeles indica (A. indica) a widely used TCM, are frequently
used for the treatment of diseases such as inflammatory diseases and immune system
deficiencies. Thus, we will use the RA mice model (collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse
model) to study the anti-inflammation effect of A. indica. During this project, we prepared three
types of A. indica extracts: a boiled extract, a 75% ethanol extract, and a 95% ethanol extract.
These extracts were then used to treat CIA mice. Preliminary results indicated that the 95%
ethanol extract was the most effective among the three in slowing the progression of CIA,
including reduced paw swelling, spleen enlargement, and cytokines in serum (interleukin (IL)-
22, IL-17A, interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α).
