◼ Biography
Dr. Huang-Yu Yang is the Director of the Department of Medical Research and Development
at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan, and serves as Chief of the Advanced Immunology
Laboratory. He graduated as valedictorian from Taipei Medical University and earned his Ph.D.
from Johns Hopkins University, USA. During his doctoral training, Dr. Yang conducted pivotal
research on the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), a central metabolic sensor involved in
regulating the balance between regulatory T cells (Treg) and TH17 cells.
Dr. Yang's research focuses on the molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying T cell
activation, differentiation, and tolerance. His laboratory aims to advance understanding in
immune tolerance—particularly in the contexts of autoimmune disease, transplantation, and
tumor immunity. His current work explores metabolic cues in the pathogenesis of lupus
nephritis and in chronic kidney disease, and he has made significant contributions in the field
of immunometabolic control for cancer.
In addition, his lab investigates the role of microRNA and epigenetic regulation in immune
responses. Dr. Yang’s research has been published in numerous high-impact journals, including
Cell, Immunity, Nature Metabolism, Clinical Cancer Research, and Diabetes Care. His work
was notably recognized by Nature Medicine in 2011 as one of the significant advances of the
year. Dr. Yang is the recipient of several prestigious honors, including the AAI Early Career
Faculty Travel Award, the Wan-Yu Chen Award, and the Outstanding Research Scholar Award.
