◼ Biography
Chi-An Cheng is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at National Taiwan
University (NTU). Born and raised in Taipei, she earned her B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry at
NTU, developing stem cell tracking strategies using fluorescent nanodiamonds. In 2015, she
pursued her Ph.D. in Bioengineering at UCLA under Professor Jeffrey Zink, creating stimuli-
responsive drug delivery platforms based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Her doctoral
work resulted in 10 publications and the UCLA Dissertation Year Fellowship. Following her
Ph.D., Dr. Cheng conducted postdoctoral research as a fellow at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Wyss Institute in Professor David Walt’s laboratory,
publishing 11 papers on COVID-19-related studies.
In August 2022, she established her laboratory at NTU, focusing on innovative protein
biomarker detection strategies, with an emphasis on extracellular vesicles (EVs) for disease
diagnosis, therapy, and prevention. Her team integrates nanomedicine, single-molecule
detection, and EV biology to develop translational solutions in precision medicine. Dr. Cheng’s
achievements have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Ta-You Wu Memorial
Award (NSTC), Emerging Young Scholar of the 2030 Cross-Generation Young Scholars
Program (NSTC), Yushan Young Scholar (MOE), Professor Chau-Jean Lee Biomedical
Engineering Development Foundation Young Investigator Award, “Dr. Yun MOU” Outstanding
Young Scholar Award, TOS Young Investigator Paper Award for Cancer Research, Pro. C.Y.
Lee Foundation Young Investigator Award, NTU Newly Employed Special Outstanding Talent
Award, and NTU Outstanding Scholar Award.
