◼ Biography
Dr. Ching-Mao Chang, M.D., Ph.D. is a physician-scientist specializing in Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a translational research focus on the integrated therapy for
Sjögren’s syndrome (SJS) and Dry Eye Syndrome (DES). He and Autoimmune Disease and
Dry Eye Syndrome Objective Measurements Lab (AIDDES Lab) advance integrated TCM
research, combining acupuncture and herbal medicine to treat autoimmune-related dry eye
disorders such as SJS and DES. His clinical trials include TBDESJS (Chun-Y u -Ching-Hua-
Yin), a herbal decoction shown to improve tear secretion, reduce artificial tear use, and enhance
sleep quality, and ACUDES, demonstrating that targeted acupuncture at GB20 (Fengchi) and
BL2 (Zanzhu) significantly alleviates dryness symptoms and improves ocular comfort. His
current work unites these interventions to explore their effects on Neural–Immune–Lacrimal
gland pathways and ocular surface stability, employing autonomic analysis, tear proteomics,
neuroimaging, and exosome–miRNA profiling to link molecular changes with clinical
outcomes. By integrating rigorous clinical data with molecular evidence, this approach provides
mechanistic validation, strengthens the scientific foundation of TCM, and paves the way for
safe, effective, and precision-tailored therapies for patients worldwide.
He has contributed multiple Letters to the Editor in leading journals, including Lancet, JAMA,
JAMA Internal Medicine, and JAMA Oncology, offering critical insights on methodology, trial
design, and clinical translation in rheumatology, immunology, and integrative medicine.
Through these works, he has contributed to fostering dialogue between TCM and Western
scientific approaches, supporting the advancement of both clinical practice and research
methodology on a global scale.
