Dear Distinguished Guests and Esteemed Scholars,
First, I would like to welcome all of you to the
international conference “Advancing Tradition and
Innovation: Challenges, Opportunities, and Prospects in
Chinese Medicine and Natural Products”, which is hosted
by College of Chinese Medicine, China Medical University
(CMU), and co-sponsored and supported by Chinese
Medicine Research Center, CMU and National Science and
Technology Council, Taiwan. It is important to mention that the International
Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research (GA) and the
International Society for Ethnopharmacology (ISE) will also participate in this
conference. This is the 40th anniversary of the Conference, demonstrating the
high significance and importance of Chinese Medicine and natural product-
related research. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid changes of the
global environment, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2000 to
2022, herbal medicine including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has played
very significant roles in healthcare in dealing with this pandemic, and

Chinese Medicine, Taiwan, which not only demonstrated its impressive
usefulness in helping to ease the symptoms of COVID-19 infection, but also set a
milestone for modernization of TCM, as well as the future development of new
herbal compound formulations and their clinical trials, paving ways for the
development of new botanical drugs.
The symposium covered topics including TCM, natural products, free radicals,
and anti-aging research, emphasizing global trends such as the integration of
traditional medicine and modern healthcare, as well as clinical applications to
industrial innovation. Besides many well-known domestic scientists in these
fields, it also brought together several international scholars as speakers, including
professor Michael Heinrich (President, Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural
Product Research (GA)), professor Namrita Lall (President, International Society
of Ethnopharmacology (ISE)), professor Victor B. Amoroso (Academician,
Division of Biological Sciences, National Academy of Science and Technology,
Philippines), professor Rudolf Bauer (Former President, International Society for
